Subject: COZY: ID Plate Location

Just a dumb question,
What is the preferred location for the metal ID plate. From my
recollection of the FARs it must now be on the outside of the aircraft and
they recommend "on the fuselage, near the tail". (What Tail?) My thought
was to locate the ID plate either on the vertical portion of the fuselage,
under the strake, just forward of the cowling flange or, on the inboard
surface of the lower winglet.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Ed,

I asked and re-asked this because I wanted my data plate inside on the
headrest and received a different answer depending on who I asked.

When it came time to get my airworthyness certificate, I went through
Seattle MIDO. My inspector told me that the regs said outside like you
stated, but that it was open to interpretation depending on the
circumstances. When I told him that I wanted to minimize any part that
could potentially go through the prop, he agreed happily that inside
would be fine as long as it was viewable when the plane was on the
ground. However, he did caution me that I may later run into some other
FAA person that could interpret the reg his way and see me in
violation. I ended up with _three_ MIDO inspectors showing up to look
at my plane that day (a very long story) and all agreed I was in
compliance.

As I understand it, the "outside" part came to be because the DEA wanted
to be able to ID planes in their drug fighting efforts. However, all
they require as I remember is the make/model and serial number. This
info does not need to be displayed on a fireproof data plate, so I
intend to make a small label and place it under the strake on the
fuselage side. This is what I have seen on some Berkuts.

The local GADO approved it inside my Varieze cockpit behind the front seat
below the canopy so you can see it while standing outside the aircraft while
standing on the ramp.......but this was in 1982.

We placed our ID plate on our Velocity on the inside of the left winglet
bottom.

Was commented fireproof data plate - I read possibly not.

I think a very good reason to have a fireproof (engraved stainless steel) is, hope never happens to anyone, if incident and
aircraft burns, likely plate will be left to identify whats left. And this could be an airport fire while tied down or
hangared. They could find the owner.

Mine was on the inside of the cockpit on the side of the fuselage next to the
fuel gauge in the Varieze. The FAA guy said as long as he could read it
standing outside the plane it did not matter where I put it.
