I am right there with you people. Check out Bill Kleb's Web site on how he and others change a per plans tub into a larger size. Hopefully Bill will tell us again where it is again. He has some good pictures on what we did. -- AeroCad Inc. Apologies if it gets posted twice. I was also appropriately spanked by Marc for posting my test email. I am sorry that I engaged my keyboard without engaging my brain first. It won't happen again. For my punishment, I will soon post my findings on various nuggets of information I have gathered while researching an alternative supplier for the fiberglass cloth. -Randy "spank me" Smith Hello, With all the discussion generated concerning adding the thigh supports for the rear seats, I am somewhat reluctant to even bring up my questions. Here goes anyway. I am building an MKIV with a friend. We are both "large" pilots in that we exceed the FAA standard "person." I am 6'0"/195 lbs. and Chris is 6'2"/195 lbs. Having both sat in Nat's cozy at OSH and Lakeland, we will definitely be widening the fuselage and raising the canopy. Having lurked on this list for almost 2 years, I have read many warnings of the certain doom and dispair that awaits us as we venture off into the unknown. So please limit your replies to positive suggestions of how we might accomplish our goals. We have decided to widen the fuselage by 6 inches. I know that I will have to modify the mounting places for the canard lift tabs and where the elevator torque tube bell cranks mount. All bulkheads will be widened. The nose _should_ be relatively the same except for a greater width at the aft end which will result in a larger nose slope overall. The landing gear attach points will stay the same as I wish to use the standard gear. This means that the holes on the landing gear bulkhead will be farther away from the fuselage sides than the original. Subsequently the additional lapping plys will need to be made longer. The linkages to the rudder and aileron will be shortened by 3 inches on each side and I will sacrifice 3 inches on each side of the strake. The canopy and turtleback will have to be made wider and cowlings custom made. When this is done, the turtleback and canopy will also be raised by 1 inch. Can anyone think of other things that will need to change that I haven't thought of? One alternative is to just make the space between the front seat back bulkhead wider and leave all other width dimensions the same. This will increase the angles of the fore and aft fuselage sides and keep the dimensions of the landing gear bulkheads and attach points relatively the same. Canopy and turtleback would be a bit tricky as well but doable. Any thoughts on this alternative? -Randy Smith --* --- -* **-* *-** -*-- -* Watch this space for COZY progress |Cozy MkIV| NCR General Purpose Computing Randy.Smith@ColumbiaSC.NCR.COM |---( )---| Global Support Center Voice 803-939-7648, V+ 633-7648 ___o/o\o___ West Columbia, SC 29170 "I am the way, the truth, and the life..." -JC From: Jim Hocut Subject: RE: COZY: Deep and wide Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 07:50:41 -0700 One thing to consider when talking about widening the fuselage is that the area ahead of the cg will act as a "lifting body" when at a positive angle of attack. Nat talked about this extensively at OSH year before last, and admitted that this is what he originally failed to consider when designing the Mk IV. This is what brought about the plans change to shorten the canard to prevent deep stall. Obviously the builder has to make the final decision as to what's acceptable or not acceptable, but I would at least play some "what if" with a spreadsheet and see what happens with front/rear seat weights if you find during your flight testing that you lose an inch or so off of your allowable aft cg. OUCH! Redicing wing area as a result.... >snip >Any thoughts on this alternative? Yup. Why not just add 3" on eaither side of B.L.-0 from F22 to the firewall; including the center spar and canard. Then just taper the front and back as needed. Would make for much simpler "adjustments" everywhere (change one thing, change everything...). So what are you going to call it?
