I have decided to build the Cozy over the velocity because the main reason is I can do more of the building myself. However in comparing I noticed that the usefull load varied 100 pounds even though the designs seem extremly close. I was wondering if there is any extra steps to take to modify the plane to handle extra weight. (has anyone done anything along these lines. (extra spar reinforcing ect..) I would gladly trade a longer roll for extra fuel and four adults.. jvasher@ic.net cozy builder wanna b' From: Marc J. Zeitlin Subject: Why velocity has 1150 useful and cozy only 1050? Remember that the Velocity starts out with 20 HP more. I don't know how the stock ground rolls compare. Also, as the builder, you can choose any gross weight you want. You could set it at 3000 lbs., if you so choose (good luck getting off the ground!) :-). If you know that you'll always be at large airports, you could placard your plane for 2150 lbs, and be legal. Just remember that Nat says only to get near the recommended gross of 2050 lbs. at low density altitudes on long runways. You'd also have to pay close attention to turbulence and your airspeed, until you burned off some fuel (about 1 1/2 hours worth). Your climb rate would get pretty crappy (in comparison with a 1700 lb cozy - you'd still outclimb a 172 with three people in it). -- Marc J. So may be some more useful load may by possible. I think that the biggest restriction may be the landing loads. Remember those brake issues. Nat also specs 1950 lbs as max landing weight. If you increase your gross weight to 2250 then you must land empty of fuel to take advantage of the increase in gross weight, not a good idea. Does anyone know what factors are restricting the landing weight? This may be pertinent to anyone considering registering their aircraft with a gross weight above the published max gross weight. I know that the Infinity retractable gear is drop tested to 2200 lbs and Matco triple puck brakes would accommodate the landing energy so, if these were the limiting factors then, it may be possible to extend the gross weight limit to 2200 lbs. " Reply: I have heard that the 100# difference on the 3 place between takeoff and landing was due to load limit of the Feather Lite main landing gear, since the 3 place used the Long Easy gear. The Mark IV uses Defiant gear (so I'm told) so that should no longer be the case. I'll bet it is just a carry over from the 3 place. It could also be a limit in the attach point. Neither of these would apply to the infinity gear. I can tell you that even on the three place it really isn't an issue. I had a very hard landing once due to wind shear and hit hard enough to compress the tire to the point that the brake disk scrapped. There was no damage to the gear or the attach point.
