It always recharges the old building juices to see others who have completed theirs and are now enjoying them. Don't you wish more of them would offer to give us poor builders rides??? When I get mine done, I sure will! I had a couple of conversations with Nat while I was there and you will probably be reading in a forthcoming issue of the newsletter of the dangers of listening to people on the internet making changes to the plans. Apparently all the posts to this group and R.A.H. were given to Nat to encourage him to get on the Internet (I remember someone posting something about that) and he took strong exception to some of my modifications. DISCLAIMER: The modifications I am making to my Cozy are my responsibility only and should not be taken as advice by any other builder (particularly first-time builders) to deviate from Nat's CozyIV plans. I agree with Nat in that if you follow the plans exactly you will end up spending less time building and will have an airplane that has been thoroughly tested by Nat and by others who have completed their exactly per-plans planes. If you choose to deviate from those plans, it would be a good idea to call Nat and go over your planned changes with him. He has good reasons why he made the choices he did. I will be cross-posting a variant of this message to r.a.h. After much discussion with Nat and other Cozy builders, I have decided to go back to the NACA scoop and the per-plans fuel system. Having had the experience of making the NACA scoop, then filling it in, I should do a better job on another one. In one of the CSA newsletters, it gives the correct design of the NACA scoop and I will try to replicate it. If any other modifications of interest been performed by persons in this group, please detail them. This is my only reservation about the A/C itself. My only other hangup is the personal skill thing. I plan on solving that with the Alexander class. This should provide the familarization to composite construction I am looking for. I would like to hear from anyone who has tried either one of these endeavors. Did the Alexander class live up to expectations, and did widing the rear passenger area cause catostrophic problems? I developed a heated pitot tube for my Cozy. It was made from a Weller solder iron heating element designed for use on 24 volts. I have never needed it in over 400 hrs of flying. I think it was written up in the Cozy newsletter about eight years ago. If you are really interested let me know and I will dig up the write up. Another comment about antennas. The imbeded dipole antennas that have been reccomended for communications in sport aviation and other articles do work, but they are very directional. For this reason, I found them unacceptable for IFR and was forced to install a standard bent whip comm ant. Iknow several people who took the class and felt it was well worth it. I didn't have the opportuinity to attend one I just dove in and went for it. Nat has expressed displeasure with anyone attempting to alter the basic flight tested (extensive) airframe and aerodynamics. Small changes do come into headaches later on because you are basically re-engineering the airplane. My advice would to build per plans, take the class and talk to Jeff Russell (owner of AeroCad and currently the Alexander Instructor) about possibly getting into his prefab Aerocad kit. This would eliminate your need to redesign the cozy but you would get the results you were looking for in the widened fuselage. Thats my input, anym other Qs write back. Bill W
