From: "John Slade" Subject: COZY: Chap 16 - nicopress swaging Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 08:47:59 -0400 Hello builders, I learned a new verb today. "to swage". Apparently it means to correctly squish or crimp those little metal ends (nicopress sleeves) on steel cables so they don't come off and spoil you're underwear. Great - but I have a few questions: The nicopress sleeves called out in the plans are 18-1-C copper sleeves. Wicks shipped 28-1-C which are listed as Zinc. The (relatively) cheap Nicopress Tool listed specifically excludes use on zinc plated copper sleeves. I see listings for copper, zinc or nickel, but not for zinc plated copper. I presume that simply whacking it with a hammer won't do. Are the 28-1-C sleeves pure zinc or zinc plated copper? Should I use them, or should I get 18-1-C copper ones? Do I HAVE to buy the "mother of all nicropress tools" for $184? Does anyone have a "mother" Nicopress tool I can borrow? Isn't this fun! My canopy is in a truck somewhere close by) PS - Apparently Microsoft doesn't know what Nicropress is - their spell checker wants to change it to "Nickers". That's funny - to an English person. Hi Régo, Ahha! Another piece to the puzzle! Thanks Régo. I should use zinc and nickel plated copper with the stainless rudder cable. I am not familiar with the choices of material, but zinc plated copper may be the hardware store variety (just a guess). We may have gotten it from Wag Aero, but I would think that any of the standard aero supply houses would have it. tc I presume that simply whacking it with a hammer won't do. I have used it on 4 airplanes and loaned it out to others. The rule on sleeves is to use zinc with stainless cable, and copper with galvanized cable. You should be using stainless cable. I believe I used some copper sleeves on stainless, before I realized that I shouldn't, but after all these years, I still haven't had any problem. I don't believe the tool knows or cares what sleeves you are using. I think if it fits inside the Nylaflow tubing we use it will reduce the friction and wear of the Nylaflow at the bends? The bearings come with two plates which let them swivel as needed. They were a little tight on the 5/8 torque tubes but, with a little adjustment to the tubes, the bearings worked out perfectly. No slop or play and very smooth. I highly recommend them. More details on my web site Chap 16. Pictures will follow.
