From: "Rick Maddy" Subject: COZY: Landing Gear Bulkhead Hardpoints Revisited Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 23:44:46 -0700 Thanks for all the replies and suggestions about my overly thick hardpoint layup. The suggestions basically fell into two categories: "It's OK, the extra thickness isn't too much", or "Fix it, you have a fundamental problem if it came out that thick". I chose to go with the latter since I was more concerned with the root of the matter. I redid the 22 layer layup and had much better results. I completed it quicker too. I actually felt like I knew what I was doing. I definitely used less epoxy and I made much more use of a hair dryer to help with thickening epoxy. The first hardpoint was 0.32" thick, the new one is 0.28". Much better. I still had a problem with the peel ply. I was extra careful to make sure the peel ply was wet enough and not starving the lower layer but when I took it off I still had a bunch of small dry spots on the top layer. Any thoughts? I'm using the 65" peel ply roll from Wicks. When's the appropriate time to cut the torque tube holes through the LG bulkheads? I'm getting ready to put the bottom on the fuselage and now seems like the easiest time to do it. I can tell you that the best time to cut these holes is NOT after you've finished the fuselage. I'd left the holes until I was ready to install the torque tubes and it wasn't as easy as I'd hoped. "Dressing" the holes (especially the one in the rear LG bulkhead) was a real pain. I wish I'd done them much earlier, when I could see what I was doing!
